MP is totally good on LAN.
My fiance and I played SoA all the way through together. Our party was a mix of custom characters and NPC's. If I recall correctly:

Minsc
Jaheria
Sorcerer (custom mine)
Fighter/ Theif (custom mine)
Quite fun.
