But I recommend multi-protocol clients over anything. They let you use alot of different chat systems (MSN, ICQ, AIM, YIM, IRC, etc.) from the one program. It helps to break down the barriers between them, to an extent (although I've yet to see one realy attempt that - might have to code such a thing myself one day..). For this, some people recommend Trillian, but I swear by GAIM. Multi-protocol, cross-platform, open source, free, small download, good interface (once you get used to it)... more than can be said for Trillian (which is multi-protocol, and only arguably free (you have to pay to get the good stuff)).
