LOL, just walk around the ladder to the other side and try again! Wouldn't know if it hadn't happened to me as well, heh. When you directly approach them from a tunnel you're on the side where the ceiling is closed - just look for the rungs if you don't want to bend your neck, the proper side is where you can see the horizontal pieces extend over the vertical ones. =)
