One trick that I try to use in many scenarios is to have traps set and then use a magic user to cast a death cloud spell(or whatever it's called), run out of the room and shut the door when they come after you. Once the traps are sprung you can attack. This method is sometimes enough to kill everyone without having to fight.
Another general method of fighting that you should use throughout the game is to position your fighters within doorways so that monsters cannot attack magic users or archers.
