From a DM to ya'all gamers.

In AD&D a character can only backstab a creature with humanoid anatomy.... which is about the same height as the character.
A giant can be humanoid but the vital organs are out of reach.
An Illith can be reached but can anyone figure out which organ goes where.
Magical creatures as Dragons cannot be backstabbed. They can be stabbed in the back but you do not receive any bonusses for damaging a vital organ of the creature. And theoratically you may backstab them if you have profession biology and specialisation in Dragons but this is outside the scope of the game and a sane DM would definately NOT approve of it.

Just whacked Firthingy yesterday, though not solo and used magic resistance and harms....
