All I know about that amendment is that the law protects anyone from having to convict onesself. Just like in the rights that are read to a person when arrested. "You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of Law." His lawyer probably told him that was the best thing to do.
But in my eyes, it is like a silent confession. If I was innocent, I would not be remaining silent. I would be screaming at the top of my lungs, and answering all questions as best I could.
