AFAIK, locusts are grasshoppers on steroids. If there's lots of grasshoppers and lots of potential food, they undergo a change, developing swarming behavior and becoming bigger.

It's useful to know if you're ever engulfed and killed by a swarm of huge brown grasshopper thingies. Your last thought can be, "at least I know what killed me."
