I've seen a post on this same subject on another site, so there is an issue here.
As previously stated, you are not missing out greatly not getting the spear.
None of my characters actually had spear proficiency, but I got the spear and sold it.
Incidentally once you've finished W&W,
Give Might and Magic IX a try, I just got it last night and so far it's a lot of fun (with the patch installed).
It's quite reminiscent of W&W.
