If you have alrady picked it up and sold it the shopkeeper will still have it. if you dropped it in a dungeon the sweeper upper will have cleared it away with all the rubbish as he / she does not want you leaving a trail to follow. You may never even get any assasin gear. Make do with rusty swords like the rest of us.
