Have you chosen the spells that you want to learn? When you look at your mage book you should see spells on the left page that you've memorized for the day and spells on the right that you "know". If you don't choose any to memorize you won't be able to cast them. Clicking on the spells on the right page should move them to the left although the icon will be "faded" until you rest. Then the icon should be solid and you're ready for some wholesale magical destruction.
