He's got a point, though. Protecting the magic-user is all part of party tactics and essential to get the most out of the party you have, and if you haven't mastered it, it might be a good idea to try. Now, if you're simply someone who doesn't like having a tricksy mage in the party, well... that's different, and easily understood.
