Well, what I do is roll, add points to strength and see how it is. All my characters in BG I, BGII and Icewind Dale have had 18/91 strength or above (most having an 18/00--it's worth rolling for). The difference between 18/03 strength and 18/00 is about the difference between having strength 14 and strength 18 (there are four strength increments between 18/01 and 18/00). Big difference. Try to get an 18/00 (just keep adding points to strength to see what 18/xx you get), 18, 18, and 8 wisdom, then you're the perfect fighter (then add more to intell if you plan to become a mage). Charisma doesn't matter in the game as you will see it can be improved to 18 right away...
