I'm not sure why they had targetable objects that you can do nothing with. The demonic figurine in Skull Castle, for one, drove me crazy trying to get it. I think I had every crate in that level piled up, climbing up to grab the thing when I finally figured out that it was useless. Oh, well, had some interesting encounters in the process...not to mention some good XP.
