I like the idea of having 3 mages in a party, but that takes up space, heres my party in this order

Me (Illusionist)
Minsc (ranger)
Keldorn (paladin)
Jaheria (fighter/Druid)
Yoshimo (getting Jan soon, anyway hes a thief)
Anomen (fighter/cleric)

Personally I like to have just one Illusionist, since I rarely use necromancy spells, and also, don't forget to have some clerics! Mages can't be your only best casters, Clerics have some nasty offensive ones as well (like the Gate Spell, one word of warning before using this. CAST PROTECTION FROM EVIL OR YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!)

Anyway back to the mage: Yes and I agree with Lucre's comment about 3 mages being overkill, just imagine 3 mages casting Delayed Blast Fireballs (Ouch!) and casting Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting (YIKES!!, although I never casted myself but I saw Irencius, this is in chapter 4 casting this on me and demiloshed me), so in my opinion, just stick with 1 or 2 mages not 3 since you need clerics and tanks also.
