I'm positive that in California at least there won't be any problem. The DMV and insurance companies are completely seperate. Unless you have an SR22, there is no way that the DMV can even tell if you have insurance. If they could easily, they wouldn't ask you for proof of insurance when they pull you over. All you legally need to park on the road is registration. That's it. You need insurance to drive, but not to park. The only one who might care that you're dropping insurance is a lein holder if you have one on the car.
