There should be an opening in the wall behind the altar after the battle. This will lead you back to the room where you burned the incense, etc. If I recall correctly, it's the hallway to the right when facing the brazier that you can't open, but which has a lever just out of reach behind the bars (obviously, you can reach the lever when you are coming out of that hallway).
