At the risk of beating a now-dead horse, I think it is only right that I should publicly eat a little humble pie (mmm, tastes like chicken). My memory was faulty in re the equation of force, and Ilander is certainly right in his correct quotations of Newton's Laws, which I have re-read as a result of this discussion to knock some of the rust off my memory cells.
