The only difference between the two would be in the manner of creation, the materials used and the smithing involved. Any other difference is cultural, since both kill with equal ease.

There was much more to the "martial arts" in the Medieval and Renaissance West than people might originally think. It is only because of the more widely-available schools of the East that make us think that martial arts come only from Asia. A master swordsman of the West could have stood his own against any samurai, and any master of savate was as deadly as any karate master.
