I think it's no coincidence he mentioned exactly 4 and a half. I know this of myself as well as from a lot of others.
I remember when I turned 4 and a half, but I don't remember anything about turning four. I can look back at the time I was four and a half and remember how the world around me looked, what interested me. My loves, my hates. From the time I was four, however, it is a complete blur.
I think some major groundbreaking thing happens in the human psyche when they are about four and a half.
And yes, I'm turning 22 next week and I can't even motivate myself to write a present wishlist. Now I'm looking forward to seeing myself in the late 50's.
