I think a lot of times people shy away from telling the truth because they're so afraid of "hurting" the other person. If they only knew! Long ago, when I was first married, I told my wife, "I can take anything you have to tell me, just TELL ME THE TRUTH." Truth, no matter how painful it may seem at the time, can always be dealt with and woven into a pattern for the future.

Oh how true! I find that lies make things so much worse eventually. Just tell the truth, even if it isn't pleasant. It's usually possible to cushion the really rough things...and the reality is, truth doesn't go away but lies get muddled and confusing and make everyone miserable longterm.

Btw, that advice goes for all our relationships, not just he romantic ones.
