I actually think from a Roleplaying point of view this is a really tricky question. If I were to construct a party with the characters I liked the most in terms of personality in it I would have Jan and Yoshimo. How can anyone not like:
"Have you been hit on the head with a rock as of late? I am in the front?".
and:
"This reminds me of the turnip cellars...".
On a gaming level I also find it hard to choose. Yoshimo as a theif rocks, Jan as a theif rocks slightly less. But Jan's mage skills more than outweigh his low levelling up. Neither of them are great in combat but Yoshimo can be dualled to a fighter I think. Might be worth a try methinks if you are worried about him not being all that useful. And Jan with a crossbow does give a handy edge to any combat.
