I think it's more like
Less people in -> More people outside who would really like to get in -> More people really wanting to know what's going on.
Throw in some mass-produced shadiness to strengthen the natural human paranaoia and you have everyone speculating what is so awesome in this thing that it cannot be told to everyone. Rumors are free advertising.
You cannot beat human curiosity.
