As for your party questions. Remember that you can always add/remove members later on if you aren't satisfied with your party.

I would have added one more mage though, but that's my opinion.

The virtualdub fix can be circumvented if you install Ace mega codec pack. The required codec is in there. However, note that even with the fixes for 2000/XP you will probably have a harder time runnin the game on XP than on Windows ME. That's not always the case since Windows ME is (in)famous for it's wide variety of major bugs.
