I had a similar problem on my new Athlon 900 PC with Quake 3. It turned out to be the Soundblaster Live! card using a resource to emulate Soundblaster 16. My 3D card needed the same resource, so at random times they stepped on each other. Try uninstalling your soundblaster drivers. If that fixes it, re-install but not the DOS drivers. I think this issue could affect any 3D game. Let us know.
PS. Slackerboy, love the sig. Especially the guy made out of blueberry jello.
