Actually, like kocconor, I came in through the side door and worked my way around too. If you come in that way through the back door, they wont attack you anyway as long as you don't attack them. At least that is what happened when I wasn't patched. Of course I did attack them as I wanted every possible xp I could get. It was tough too since my Monk was still pretty weak, but worth it.
