I frequently used Half Ogre bands as NPCs that could be persuaded into helping out PCs who were between a rock and a hard place. Of course 12 half-ogre mercenaries really cost them

I did suggest to the DM though that there should be the ability for an Orc or Half-orc mage, or some other large creature which would have magic resrictions, but would have d6 or d8 hit points and better figthing stats than a regular mage.
