The fire elementals druids can summon are outstanding. Aerial servants are also great. Skeleton warriors are very durable with high magic resistance but don't do as nice damage.
All of those summons have long durations. Cast them when you enter an area and they will stick with you the whole time. To me those are the summons that are the best bargains. Spider spawn is a nice mage spell though to hold you over till you can cast the better stuff.
