There have been plenty of characters in stories who have grown up surrounded by vast stores of arcane lore.... and ended up as a warrior or somesuch.
And playing through BG1 with a mage character would be hellish in the beginning. A whopping 6 HP is the maximum you can muster at level 1. 2 hits from just about anything and you're down.
(Granted you can stick him in the rear, but even then there can be problems.)
