Against mages (and Shadow Thieves, Rune Assassins, and any of the many monsters that use invisibility or illusions like Mirror Image), it is indispensable. I always keep at least one memorized, unless I have Keldorn (who can use it as a special ability). You can do without it, but things will be a lot harder for you (especially against tough monsters like liches).
