Windows is OK if you just want a desktop. If you want more you'll start see the differences. Like lennon said, the command line and configurability are great. There are so many choice and you can configure anything you want. Also it gives useful error messages and doesn't try to prevent you from things you might not want. Security is just as good as you want it to be in either linux or windows and in both you have to do something for it but the linux model is better.
