Nope. *nix based run a hosts or lmhosts file as well. MacOS X does the same in it's under belly because it's BSD based. Other versions of Mac should have that functionality burried somewhere in the system, but Apple likes to hide things from it's users and I don't know enough about Mac's.
Anyway it's all standard networking stuff, not brand stuff.
