Spook is the BEST effective spell!! Get it at most shops at the Waukeens Promenade or Trademeet.
As for the Staff of Magi it should (?) protect you from Fiends.
Remember as with the invisiblility you have to re-equip yourself if you casted a spell.... I'm guessing here
