I have to wonder if it was really the cat or he didn't want to admit doing something stupid like "assuming" it wasn't loaded while playing with it. I think I remember a piece in a gun rag a few years back where an effort was made to get several models of semi-auto handguns to fire as a result of an impact/drop/fall in which the trigger was not involved. They ran them through a clothes dryer, dropped them so as to land on the hammer, butt, muzzle etc. in an effort to get the pistol to fire. None of the modern weapons could be induced to fire. I believe they were successful with an old government colt modified to be more sensitive, but nothing else.
