Once you attract the Umber Hulks using Alaric's hint get everyone out of the room, and have a magic user cast Cloud kill(or whatever it's called) on the Hulks. Then get out and close the door. Cloud Kill is a very effective method for killing Umber Hulks and certain other monsters, you can also cast entangle or grease spell's to make it harder for them to get out of the cloud. As far as closing the door is concerned it's somewhat of a flaw in the game that enemies can't open doors, but it's alot of fun listening to them scream.
In this case not only will you get XP points for baiting the Hulks with the bones, you will gain additional XP's for killing them as well.
