Ah well looks like ScottG has the answer! I've only ever played straightforward monk/rogue characters and don't have the SoU manual which explains the rules for most of the prestige classes so I hadn't looked up the specifics for the assassin.

I am currently mad about monks, and a monk with a sneak attack is unstoppable!
