you're halway there
each class of monster is assigned a certain number of hit dice.
so for instance, say you have 2 ogres. they both have x hitdice (let's say 4 I don't remember). so for each ogre those 4 dice are rolled to determine the hitpoints. The first ogre may have 24 hp while the second only has 12. With the death spell it doesn't matter how many points they have, just how many dice that class of creature gets. Got it? good
