Interesting piece, and not too bad in the left or right department for a NY times piece. I would however point out, in the authors effort to claim that America is an empire, they had to completely redefine what the word meant [img]smile.gif[/img] the assertion that like the Roman empire whent, so shall all other empires go...except...the Romans had some serious brain damage to contend with due to their use of lead int heir drinking water supply. The British Empire didn't collapse due to the hatreds it inspired. I doubt seriously that the US will be considered an empire by future historians. (of course if the US is the dominant nation, they will write the history books).

On a side note, after seeing in detail the rambelings of historians about a reletively recent event such as the Lincoln presidency...I can conclusivly say..Historians know dick!
