Conjurer is far better, since Project Image, Mislead and Simulacrum will make everything more or less a walkover, depending on how much you abuse them

For summons, use Spider Spawn - this levels up as youi do, and Sword Spiders are wicked.

And yes - scout with a thief that has the cloak of non-detection and a high high stealth score, and you can't go wrong.
