That has happened to me as well. It appears to happen only to the character who brings back the Band of Boars - IOW, the only one who hasn't heard the "Someone else got the ring" speech. No one else gets to double dip

I don't know if a role change is required. It seems to me that it happens the next time that character walks into a pawn shop.
