Nice little map at the bottom. Fact is, countries with looser firearm laws have many more guns available than countries with tougher laws and apparently as a result, higher instances of gun related crime.

But maybe it's cultural too. In the last couple of years I've worked in: Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Korea, New Zealand, Canada, USA and of course Australia. The USA is hands down the most dangerous, violent and disturbing country I have experienced. I like many things about this place, but it's something I have to factor in when I come here. Nowhere am I more alert and distrustful of people on the street...
