That's probably what he meant. I don't think anybody would attempt to deny the existence of Roman/Greek/Norse/whatever mythology.
That having been said, Lord of the Rings is certainly an incredible fantasy series that probably did birth an entire genre of writing - or at least boost its popularity significantly.
But The Hobbit was the best book of them all.
Nirvana (yes, the band) is overrated.
