You forgot to ask him before you let him go/killed him? Of course, you could just push all of the buttons until you figure it out (i.e. punishment for forgetting). While I'm a mean enough PnP DM to do that to my players, you asked nicely, so try:

Triangle Button, Red Wheel, Medium Lever.

All of the above was tongue in cheek, of course...
