Well, you actually will not be flipping that switch, or getting that key, at least from THAT side of the grate
What you want to do is take that crystal of yours, and see if there is somewhere you can stick it, possibly backtracking a bit from where you are. *spoiler below*
Take the crystal back upstairs and the room at the base of the stairs has a receptacle for it. That'll bring down an elevator.
