Indeed, in which case I've pretty much made clear already that my vote goes the Beatles. I merely expanded my post with what I consider to be my personal favourites, as I hadn't posted about that this week yet (

). But you could disregard that part, if you like.

The Beatles broke up over 40 years ago but everyone has heard of them, their albums still sell and their music is still being played. No other group has been as innovative, they had the first concept album and the first music video. They were extremely innovative in the instruiments they used. They had an enourmous influence on popular music and continue to do so today.
No offence to anyone's taste in music but some of the names being put forward as the greatest here are just laughable. Ask yourself if your favourite group will be talked about in 40 years time.

Oh, probably not. Some of my favourite bands are hardly ever even talked about nowadays, but I'm not complaining.

But popularity doesn't automatically equal quality - while the question whether they'll still be talked about in 40 years is a sum of both, and several other as-of-yet unpredictable factors and contexts. And it's one of the sad consequences that many very influential and decent bands will never get the acknowledgement and respect they deserve. But I suppose we're going off topic now.

I will; you're right, was actually thinking of another song. But what I was trying to hint at, was the extraordinary talent of the Beatles to turn the most simple of melodies into catchy, not too deep songs - something I deeply respect, but not all of those songs will be played regularly in Grojlach Mansion. I prefer most of their later, more psychedelic work.
