The best solution, sadly, is to only MP with poeple you know, or on servers that are exceptionally strict about that type of thing, with a constant level of DM vigilance.
It cuts down your options by a whole chunk, but the time you have playing is better. I think, anyway.
That being said, although I agree that PKers are scum, i have met many people carrying uber gear who are not interested in PKing, and are actually extremely nice people. Some are hyper-protected against PKers, others just like exploring without having to worry about dying or spending 20 minutes fighting monsters (!)they could just blitz in 20 seconds
. Others just love 'being' super powerful, and using their powers on the monsters. All PKers carry uber gear, but not all uber-gear carriers are PKers.
