Many here have soloed as mages.

I think mages aren't used in every battle because they are like the heavy artillery. They personally possess lots of firepower, but not much defense. Not really necessary to cast spells against a couple of goblins, just throw darts or sling stones, but against the bigger, badder enemies mages are invaluable!
