ok, i got it the wrong way around. i checked at
this thread, and found out that the baatezu are devils, meaning their the lawful sort, while the Tanarri are demons, making them chaotic. the baatezu inhabit the nine layers of hell, while the tanarri inhabit the, not sure how many but i think 3 or 4, layers of the abyss. you can actually figure this out if you have read the drizzt novels or if you read the dialogue of drizzt's company in bg2. Wulfgar is tortured by the True Tanarri Errtu, a balor, and then Bruenor says something like "ill send you to the abyss", and then Wulfgar answers, "ive been there, nothing special". from that we can find out that at least balors, who happen to be Tanarri, live in the abyss, meaning all Tanarri live in the abyss, because they would be killed in the nine hells, making them the chaotic demons everyone fears. there, that should shed some light into the basics of the inhabitants of the underworld.
only one question remains however, how can there be four demons with irenicus, wouldnt it be smarter to have four devils(baatezu) with him, since we are in THE NINE HELLS for gods sake. and further, how can a balor look like a pit fiend? is the reason to that so the glabrezu wont look excatly like the balor would? wheres the point in that, as the glabrezu isnt supposed to even look like that!
