The following images are REAL... I was hiking through the hills this morning on a little out-of-the-way nature walk/game of golf, and I saw in the distance what looked like an old tree, as I neared the structure, however, I noticed that I wasn't looking at a tree at all, though we have Banyons and Mango trees in Cuba that grow quite tall, and lots of big palms, this one was down-right impossible! I asked a nearby fellow-observer who told me the structure was in fact a gigantic cactus that had been at the point since the 1700s... It was one of the oddities that Columbus must have missed when he landed just 2 miles away from the point because he never really headed out into the grasslands, They've actually built a golf course around the thing! My game was pretty much on par, but this was off charts, I was suprised i'd never noticed the thing before, it was so BIG! and it's obviously still alive, not actually relying on the stump or the huge underground roots, it grows layers upon layers until gravity pulls the cactai back down to the ground like branches. It's amazing you can even sit in the shade of the thing! If i was to give it a rough estimate i'd say it stands about 30 feet tall... This first photo shows where I fist saw the darned thing, standing on a hill overlooking the course... The rest are close-up shots...
You can also download this link to watch a little film i taped while lookin' at it with my still photo camera (yes the quality sucks it's only 800k in size):
