Raistlin, have you ever considered playing with a smaller party than six?
Personally, playing with 6 characters is a bit too messy, and especially the mages of the party need constant attention while still at low level. A smaller party also means more experience divided over your party members, so you'll level up faster as well; weaker party members will reach a higher level a lot faster and will be less of a nuisance. After the first party I have ever played through the game with, my party has never been bigger than 4 characters. Normally I go for one cleric-type, one mage-type and one character able to tank; whatever I drag along besides that doesn't really matter, depends on if you need an extra tank or not.
Keep in mind that the game will be actually easier with a smaller party, especially in the later parts of the game.
