There is nothing inherently un-American in believing the state should own everything. Unwise, certainly, but not un-American. Capitalism/Socialism/Communism are simply points on a sliding scale measurement of how intertwined the government and private enterprise are.
If you want to be technical, we are not pure Capitalists in America. We are, in fact socialist in many ways. Now, saying that will be considered UnAmerican by many, but the truth is the truth. When the government collects roughly 30% of its peoples' money and has many nationalized industries, including several institutionalized monopolies (like the Post Office), it is socialism, albeit a lesser degree of socialism than, say, Norway.
